Blog Post #3- Speech Theories

The eight speech theories are the marketplace of ideas, the participation in self-government, stable changes, individual self-fulfillment, checking on governmental power, the promotion of tolerance, the promotion of innovation, and to protect dissent. The theory I agree with the most is the one focused on individual self-fulfillment, because it is focused on ones personal freedom to say their opinion no matter what it is and what side it is on. I think it is good for everyone to do their own personal research to be sure about the political views they have and make sure it is fully aligned with their morals. "Congress shall make no law...abridging freedom of speech" (United States Court). This quote shows the heavy importance of saying whatever you want to and having your own personal opinions. This theory feels the most important because you don't want to attack someone for their personal thoughts. The one that feels the most personal to me is the marketplace of ideas. This one states that truth will always win out against false claims. It is very important to me to understand what is going on in the world outside of myself and what I interact with. It is important to know that the news I am viewing isn't lying to me or showing any fake images either. "Fake news is a perennial problem but really begins to ramp up in the election season as conspiracy theories and misinformation by bad actors aim to manipulate voters" (Tech Explore). This quote shows the significance of telling the truth as much as possible. Since it is almost election time this year there will probably be a lot more fake news and propaganda pieces from all sides showing up trying to get as many last minute extra voters as they can. This source also talks about a new AI which is supposed to help get rid of a lot of fake news and the ones who spread them. "The researchers' audience-based models outperformed the more common approach of looking at who's sharing misinformation by large margins: 33% when looking at , and 69% when looking at sources as they emerge over time." (Tech Explore). Since the technology is still pretty new the data percentages are not very high but it is still interesting to learn that something similar to this may be possible in the future too. One theory I can still notice today is to Promote Innovation. This theory states that a community with more freedom of speech will thrive better then those with less freedoms of speech. If we could spread these eight theories to those around us we could help create a community similar to this. I have seen this personally that places where people can express themselves more and are more open to any kinds of opinions no matter what it is about are usually happier, friendlier, and more engaging. I think if we can continue to improve on this theory then more of us can be accepting and friendly to those who are outsiders that we have never seen before.

Blog Post #2 Supreme Court Video In-Class

One thing I learned from the video that I did not know before is the amount of petitions the supreme court gets every year and also how many they actually accept. The video showed stacks of petition papers being sent in that are sent to the Supreme Court daily.

The most important take-away point I saw in the video was when one of the newer judges got to see the Supreme Court offices and other representatives for the first time. She talked about how the experience was life changing and helped her see a lot about how her like will shape for the rest of her time as a Supreme Court judge. I think this was important because of the fact that she appreciated getting to see this secret are of the U.S. that is so important to everyone who lives here and she didn't take any of it for granted.

The most surprising thing I learned was how long each member of the Supreme Court is in duty for. It said on average they stay active for sixteen years but a lot of the time go even longer.

Seeing this video and the discussion between the Supreme Court judges helped me understand a lot more about the Supreme Court and this major importance. It was also interesting to learn about their thoughts and discussions because normally you don't get to hear the perspectives of Supreme Court judges.

Blog Post #1 My Top 5 Sources

 5- Twitter

Twitter is a unique place to get new from compared to other modern social media because it recently had a huge change to it and a lot of their policies are different now. Twitter is a place where you can find news from any side of an argument weather that's a good or bad thing. I use it to learn about a lot of stuff happening for people I follow and creators I like but there is always the latest bit of political news on there as well. So It helps keep me informed on some major real life issues.

4- Apple News

Apple News you can use to subscribe/follow any kinds of media outlets you like and I have some turned on so I always see the news when major things happen. It can be catered but also is mostly used for just fresh news articles and information to help keep you informed.

3- TikTok

While sometimes TikTok is not the best source for people who use it a lot there tends to be many political livestreamers/commentators on the app as well as ads that point you towards a particular candidate. It can also be used to spread information very fast so when anything major happens it will spread the fastest on TikTok.

2- Instagram

Instagram is a good place to gather information because it is an image sharing platform for the most part and includes many ways of communication. With the Instagram Stories feature you can share something to your followers that you saw and you thought was important for 24 hours. This is a good feature to help your close friends on the app learn about things and communicate with each other.

1- Youtube

Out of these I use Youtube the most so I know where to go when I need to find news from it. If I am trying to learn something from Youtube it is pretty simple and not long after major events occur someone will make a video on it and you can start to gather information. I think this one is the best to learn and get information because of the variety of content and amount of things you can find on almost anything.
